Language as a Window into Human Nature: Creating “Awkwardness” in Improv

I love RSA Animate’s videos, here’s the most recent one I’ve watched, all about language and social niceties of language. In improv contexts, I was thinking about the three relationships described (Dominant, Communal, Reciprocal) and thought up a quick improv exercise for the indermediate/advanced improviser. New Game! (As yet untitled…gotta try it with a group [...]

Four on a Couch – Game for a Group

Four on a Couch This one is perfect for groups of 10 or more (I’d say up to 40). We play it every year at our camp Christmas party and its always a huge hit! To play this game, you must have even numbers. Ask everyone to get a chair and sit in a circle, [...]

Summer News

So much has happened this summer and I’ve been outside, not in at the computer blogging or tweeting about it. Oh, so sorry. But the summer has been great so far: Camp Trainings – I was fortunate to make it out to three camps for training sessions this summer. Kettleby Valley is always fun – [...]

Drama Games Database

I’ve started putting my game ideas down, not on paper, but in an easy-to-access file. It works if you know what you’re looking for…I visit this database to find the perfect drama game or warmup when working with a specific group. It’s also good for when I need to refresh my memory about “character games” [...]

Penny Games

Flipper Flopper Need: one penny for each pair The Game: Divide into partners. One partner is the Flipper, one is the Racer. Racers line up at the starting line, Flippers at the finish line. Flippers, as fast as they can, must flip their coin and report what comes up. Heads – racer takes two steps [...]

Table Games

Fun games to play around the Table! These are great for family get-togethers and camp meal times! Puff Hockey – A game for two players.  Ball up a tissue, create goals at either side of the table with salt shakers or something small (I recommend going the short way across). Without touching the tissue, try [...]

Story Spine

I just had a fabulous workshop (two, acutally) with teacher candidates at Laurentian University here in Sudbury. I also used this with the grade 8 classes I worked with in New Hamburg last week (it’s been a busy teaching time – I’m loving it!). Use this as a great tool for introducing improvised storytelling: This [...]

Falling

Falling (about 20 minutes for full progression, can be done over a series of days/sessions) Attribution: I learned this at the Improv Show in Kingston from my co-coach and business partner Richard Allen. I’ve since used it with groups of students aged 13-14 and 15-18 with huge success. Good for: trust, awareness, team building, group [...]

Gimo!

GIMO (“GHEE-mo”) A wonderfully active game that helps with learning names and getting energy out. Needing no props, it’s easy to play anywhere there’s open space! Number of players: 8 to 20 Set up: Divide group into two teams.  Identify two goal areas (hula hoops are great, or taped “x”s on the ground) that are [...]

Mystery Notes

I found a mystery game, well, notes for one. What could this mean? “Chicken Little; no talk, sky is falling…”

Yee Haw!

Yee Haw is a great, energizing warmup. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to learn and has HUGE re-playability. It’s great for the beginning or end of a session when you want engagement levels high and are looking for something fun.

Layers

Layers Groups: this works for groups of 8 to about 30. Grades 6 and up, modifying difficulty as necessary. The Game: Stand everyone in a circle. This is an energy-passing game that requires lots of focus from all players. Add each layer after mastering the layer previous. This can be accomplished in one go, or over [...]

Zoom!

This is the warmup I use when beginning almost all of my sessions. A bit of a classic and I guess it’s endured because it works and it’s easy to explain.   ZOOM Attribution: I’ve seen many leaders use this game, it was a favourite of ours, those of us who played in Kingston’s “The [...]
